RL interrupts: flooding in Detroit

12 Aug

You might have seen the flooding in the Detroit area in the news today. The pump in our basement died and I found about 1168 gallons/4421 litres of water this morning (based on the depth and the size of the room). No matter how digital our lives might be, how we may dream of future technologies and embrace a part-time avatar existence, the physical world always pulls us back.

We were relatively lucky. People I know had their entire homes flooded: carpeting, furniture, clothing, everything. Most of our losses are things we should have gotten rid of long ago anyway, though I shed a few tears over some childhood books. This is an opportunity to simplify and organize.

We bailed out what we could, but the drain is full and more rain is headed this way. There’s nothing more we can do right now: we will have a couple inches of water in the basement until a new pump arrives. Thank heavens for overnight shipping via Amazon, because local stores are sold out. Then, we can haul things into the lawn to dry and I’ll start scrubbing the mildew.

It won’t be a fun week, so forgive my lack of posts while I attend to the physical.

Thanks Kathi. Makes me wish for virtual water I could just delete.

Yes, yesterday was interesting. My usual commute to work is still flooded and impassable. Thinking of buying an inflatable kayak to keep in the trunk, for next time. 14 feet of water at a major highway intersection calls for just such a contingency.

Oh what fun. :/ I hope it’s better for you tomorrow. I have an inflatable boat… it’s in my basement, in a soaked, disintegrating cardboard box. Maybe the trunk is a better spot for it!
